Express Your Selfie

Take a photo of yourself that shows who you really are!

Start out with a community builder! Choose one from BGCA's YD Toolbox app or you could try this:

- Invite members to show one photo of themselves that most expresses who they are. Ask them to explain why that photo is such an accurate portrayal.

Check-In with members by asking a question like:

- Pair up and tell your partner about the last thing you posted on social media.

This is a device-enabled session. Revisit any group norms or expectations related to device usage in your Club as needed.

STEP 1
TIME: 5 MINUTES

What is a selfie?

Buzz Aldrin's space selfie

Have your ever taken a selfie? It’s basically a self-portrait, usually one you take while holding the camera yourself.

The word “selfie” isn’t that old, but people have been taking photos of themselves for a long time. Robert Cornelius took the very first photo self-portrait in 1839. Buzz Aldrin even took a selfie in outer space 1966!

Painted self-portraits have been around even longer- for hundreds of years. Artists like Vincent Van Gogh and Frida Kahlo are famous for their self-portraits. Now you can share yours!
Selfies are often used for sharing on social media, or on My.Future! Remind your members that the photo should express who they are or how they feel, but should also be something that another user can easily see and understand. Try to avoid overly blurry or dark photos.

STEP 2
TIME: 5 MINUTES

What describes you?

Take a few minutes to think about what is important to you. What do you want your selfie to say about you?

Find a friend or some paper and brainstorm. What words would you use to describe yourself? What activities or locations? Is the focus on your smile or your shoes? Once you have an idea of what your selfie should show about you, it’s time to take one!
Members may want to include their friends or other parts of the club in their selfie. You may want to discuss where and when photography is appropriate with your members before they start taking pictures.

STEP 3
TIME: 10 MINUTES

Your selfie

Take your selfie! It may take a couple of tried to get the right photo. Check your camera or camera app before starting to make sure you know how it works and which functions you’ll be using; you may need a flash or zoom to get it just right!

Once you have the perfect selfie, share it with your group, or upload it to get a star!
Members who are using computers or devices they are not familiar with might not know the functions right away. Take a few moments to help them find important features on the camera or app before they begin.
