Design a Poster

Design a poster for an upcoming event.

Ideally each member will work at his or her own computer for this project. Vectr is a free graphic design software that can be used online or downloaded to a computer or mobile device. If your Club has low bandwidth, download the program to Club computers prior to this activity. To download the Vectr app on Club devices (or to encourage members to download Vectr on their own devices) visit this link: https://vectr.com/downloads/

WHAT YOU'LL NEED

Computer

STEP 1
TIME: 5 MINUTES

Gather poster ideas

What events are coming up in your club, school, or community? Is there . . .
a basketball game?
a school play?
a bake sale?
a pet birthday party?
a contest at the Club?

Chose an event for which you’d like to make a poster.
Give members choice about which event they will make a poster for. Or have everyone make a poster for the same upcoming Club event.

STEP 2
TIME: 25 MINUTES

Plan your poster

First, write down the important information that should be on your poster. For example, if your poster is about a music performance, you’ll want to include the date, time, and location.

Next, use a smartphone or camera to take a photo of something related to your poster topic. For instance, if your poster is about a pet adoption event, take a photo of a cute cat or dog.

The last step in planning your poster is to sketch what you want it to look like. Write the words giving the important information. Sketch out a spot for the photo you took. Are there other symbols or shapes you’d like to include?

Hold a group brainstorm on the important information that should be included on the posters for the club event. Have a member write the information on the board. Next have members take photos of things that represent the theme of the poster. Then share the graphic design examples from other club members. Lastly, have them sketch a visual plan for their poster.

STEP 3
TIME: 10 MINUTES

Begin designing

Open Vectr. Click “Use Online.” First, add a background. To do this, choose a shape from the toolbar on the left. For example, you could choose a rectangle and click and drag on the white workspace. If you need to resize it, you can click and drag on any of the little white squares in the corners of the rectangle. Then you can change the color and border of the shape using the menu on the right side of the screen. You can also add other shapes, like a circle, on top of the background.

If you need help with shapes, click the help button (“i” in a circle) at the top right corner of the screen. Then click on Lessons. Next choose the Selections lesson. Watch the video and follow the direction in the interactive part of the lesson.

Begin this activity by demonstrating how to add a background. Talk members through your process as you follow the instructions in the member version of this activity.

STEP 4
TIME: 10 MINUTES

Add a photo

Now upload the photo to the computer you’re working on. Save the image to the computer. Make sure you know where you save it and what you named it!

Next, return to your project in Vectr and click the Upload Image button (cloud with an up arrow) on the left side of the screen. Select your photo and then click Open. Move the photo by clicking on it and dragging it. You can resize it the same way you resized your shape for the background. You can also add a border or a shadow using the menu to the right.

Demonstrate uploading a photo from a digital camera or smartphone to a computer. Then put the photo in your poster by clicking the Upload Image button (cloud with an up arrow) on the left side of the screen. Demonstrate resizing and moving the photo.

STEP 5
TIME: 10 MINUTES

Add text, export, and upload

Now it is time to add words to your poster. Click on the T icon in the menu to the left. Then drag a box on your poster where you want the words to go. Next start typing. Finally you can edit the size, style, and color of the text using the menu on the right.

When you are happy with your design, export it by clicking on the icon with a rectangle and an arrow pointing up; it is in the upper-right corner. You must change the file type to from svg to png using the drop-down menu on right side of the screen. Then click “Download.”

When you like the way your poster looks, upload it to My.Future!

Demonstrate how to add text to the poster by clicking on the T icon in the menu on the left. Then drag a box on the poster where you want the words to go. Next start typing. Finally you can edit the size, style, and color of the text using the menu on the right.

When members finish designing, tell them to export their work by clicking on the icon with a rectangle and an arrow pointing up; it is in the upper-right corner. The next step is very important. Members must change the file type from svg to png. Then they can click Download.
