WHAT YOU'LL NEED

Computer or Phone
PencilAndPaper

STEP 1
TIME: 5-10 MINUTES

Farm to Table

All of the food you eat starts on a farm somewhere and goes on a multi-step journey to get to you. This is called the farm-to-table continuum. Your favorite foods might even be world travelers.

Some of the main steps on the farm-to-table continuum are: the farm itself, processing the food to get it ready to sell, transporting the food and selling the food at a grocery store or restaurant. Before you eat it, the food must also be prepared and served to you.
Explain the farm-to-table continuum to members.

STEP 2
TIME: 3 MINUTES

Sandwich Shop

Think about your favorite sandwich. What is the sandwich made of? What kind of bread is used? What things go on the sandwich?

Take a moment to write down everything on your sandwich.
Help members identify the different components of their favorite sandwich.

STEP 3
TIME: 10-20 MINUTES

Where Did It Come From?

Your sandwich probably contains foods from all over the world.

Research the main ingredients of your sandwich to find out where the ingredients are grown. What area of the world, or what country, or what state might your sandwich ingredients come from? Some websites you can use are:

This map shows where different crops (plants) were first grown.

This site shows where certain crops (plants) are grown now.

This map shows which crops (plants) are grown in different states in the USA.

Help members research where their sandwich ingredients come from.

STEP 4
TIME: 10-30 MINUTES

What Stops Did It Make?

Some parts of your sandwich look like they come straight from the farm – like lettuce. Some other parts are probably processed which means the ingredients have been changed or preserved.

Pick one component of your sandwich and research to find out how it is processed. To get started, you can look at these tables that show how different food groups are processed, and the different benefits of processing foods.

STEP 5
TIME: 10-30 MINUTES

Follow That Food

Summarize your research on the journey your food takes to make it from farm to sandwich. You can write down what you found out, draw a picture or a map or even make a video.
