STEP 1
TIME: 10 MINUTES

Don't Think, Just Speak

Gather a group of friends to play a speedy word game. One person should say a noun (person, place or thing). Everyone in the group should go around and says the first thing that pops into his or her head. There is no right or wrong thing to say. If you want, you can keep going until someone hesitates or repeats something someone else said.

For the first couple rounds you could begin with a random, funny word. Then, do a little experiment and try starting a couple rounds with the words below.

-- Hashtag
-- Social change
-- Volunteer
-- Campaign

If you prefer to give this a try by yourself, make a word web with the starting word in the middle of a piece of paper. Write all the things it makes you think of around the main word.
Gather the group to play a quick word game. If you are working with more than 10 members, break them into two groups. Explain that the first person is going to say a noun (person, place or thing) and everyone else will go around and say the first thing that pops into his or her head. There are no right or wrong answers.

If you want to make this activity more game-like, you can tell members to keep going around in the circle, rapid-fire, until someone hesitates or repeats something someone else said.

For the first two or three rounds, you can get things started with a silly word, like snuggie or snickerdoodle. Then, start throwing out words related to the day’s activity, like hashtag, social change, volunteer and campaign.

STEP 2
TIME: 5 MINUTES

The Basics of Online Change

Watch this video.

6YoungMoversShakers from Common Sense Educators on Vimeo.

Choose at least one of the following questions to answer. Write down your answer or talk about it with a friend.

-- What was your biggest takeaway from this video?
-- What part of this video struck you the most? Why?
-- What do you want to know more about? Why?

Watch the intro video as a group or have members watch individually or in pairs. Then have them discuss (as a group, small group, or in pairs) one of the questions listed in the youth instructions.

STEP 3
TIME: 20 MINUTES

How to Create Change

Making a difference doesn’t have to be some grand thing that is immediately going to change the world. One way to create social change is to join other efforts. There are things you can do right now, like in the next 20 minutes, to help social change campaigns.

Go to DoSomething.org. Click through the site’s campaigns (activism projects) and find a few that spark your interest. Choose one that you can do now. Sign up on DoSomething or just do the project without signing up. Either way, you are making positive change.

Here are some examples of campaigns you can do now:
Mirror Messages
Elephant Tusk Force
Shower Songs

Take a picture or screenshot of whatever you decide to do.
Tell members they are going to join tens of thousands of teens around the world in taking action to support a positive cause. Let them know they are going to contribute to that cause now, within the next 20 minutes or so. Explain that having a social impact doesn’t always involve a lot of time and planning.

Direct members to DoSomething.org. Invite them to explore the site for just a couple minutes and then have them choose one campaign they can participate in now. They can either sign up or just do the project without signing up on DoSomething. (Members who are younger than 13 shouldn’t sign up on the site due to legal requirements, so participating in the campaign without signing up is the better bet for younger members.)

If members are stumped or indecisive, use the suggested campaigns in the youth instructions to get them started.

Make sure members take a picture or screenshot of whatever they decide to do.

STEP 4
TIME: 5 MINUTES

Share and Recruit

Share what you just did with a friend. Ask them to help you next time you do this project. Make a plan for when that will be. How about tomorrow?
Gather the group and ask youth to share what they just worked on. Encourage members to give each other positive feedback. Maybe the next day members can continue working their project or they can swap projects and give a different one a try.

Another option for a wrap-up activity is to have a group-brainstorm about a social change campaign that would benefit your Club or community directly.

STEP 5
TIME: 5 MINUTES

Save and Submit

Upload the photo or screenshot of what you did to support a DoSomething.org campaign. Earn a star.
